Thai Spirit Journey

My time in Thailand definitively changed who I was. I arrived in the country with zero apprehensions, except for one: was I going to have a good internship? To be honest, it was a fair question. Spending 9 weeks in a country with a culture so different from my own is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I knew I’d remember forever—so it really couldn’t end up being a bad memory.

To my absolute delight, this internship with Thai Spirit was an indescribable joy. Immersing myself in rural Thailand was deeply enriching. The locals are incredibly generous and kind, and the kids were always thrilled to meet a foreigner, constantly asking me to play football with them (much to my delight—CR7 the GOAT!). The food is delicious and healthy (Pad Kra Pao is my absolute favorite), a far cry from American fast food that makes you regret every bite. That said, if you’re not careful, you might pick a dish so spicy it’ll make you regret every bite for a completely different reason!

Looking back, you might think I’m easy to please, but honestly, the genuine warmth of the people meant I never felt homesick. In France, people can sometimes be bitter; some dislike foreigners or judge those who struggle while trying to speak French. Here, it’s the exact opposite. People are respectful and appreciate every single effort you make to speak Thai. Ultimately, I’m convinced that any European would love a trip to Thailand. The lifestyle is so different that it shifts your entire perspective on what you truly need to be happy.

Alongside my assigned tasks, my supervisor, Tum, gave me free time and days off so I could explore Thailand’s top sights. I visited Krabi with its breathtaking beaches like Railay Beach, the 4 Islands, and the Phi Phi Islands, as well as Koh Lanta. But my best memory of the whole trip was exploring the islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Koh Tao was a feast for the eyes—crystal-clear water, stunning viewpoints over the entire island, and incredible snorkeling with vibrant marine life. Koh Phangan, on the other hand, stole my heart. The energy at the jungle parties, meeting travelers from all over the world, and the atmosphere of the Full Moon Party are timeless memories. Finally, Koh Samui brought a rich cultural experience with its many impressive Buddha temples

Guided by Ban Lee and Sin, two bamboo construction experts, the work progressed quickly and smoothly. Beyond the great atmosphere and the meaningful nature of the project, I learned eco-friendly, bio-sourced techniques for building with bamboo.

In short, this internship was the greatest experience of my life. Stepping far outside my comfort zone, stepping away from my daily routine, and connecting with locals until I felt more integrated into Thai culture day after day is something I will cherish forever. And, of course, I’ll never forget the endless laughs shared with Tum.
